Hey hey hey! So it’s been a productive week here at BOTNB HQ, I feel like Bayern Munich in the sense that we’ve announced and got new plans under way for the future if not immediate term (but I am aware they are still capable of winning all the competitions they are in)…

Basically we have finally started podcasting, we won’t be pushing it massively for 3 or so episodes but to ye the regular followers already you can find it via the www.facebook.com/backofthenetboy facebook page or http://backofthenetboy.podomatic.com/entry/2013-01-17T15_01_10-08_00, I am still learning the ropes of getting it up via iTunes, apparently it takes a few days, so you can subscribe to it as of next time I hope.

Also got a brand new competion up and running, all there on FB page too, called the ‘Spine’… better name needed. But it is really exciting me anyway. Keep tooooooooooned folks, but let’s get back to the case in point…

REVIEW OF NEW CORK COSMOS IN GAMEWEEK 22

Another shi*storm of a gameweek, this time getting substantially less than half of the highest score and about 50% less than the bloody average. The only good point I can find is that I’ve slipped down into 69th position…. in-your-endo

WHAT’S THE POINTS

Points scored last week                       - 40 Points
Average points scored in that week      - 57 points
Points off the top                                 - 297 points, a further 49 points since christmas.
Position in BOTNB League                - 69th (down another 7 places   L x 7 )

My only defence for the omnishambles of last gameweek is my defence, those 3 guys who went out there scored nearly ½ the points the whole team accrued. All my midfielders scored 2 points, seriously like, many midfielders managed to get 8 points on their own. Forwards equally bad, sure you can look at it yourself…

Apparently my Bentenke kicked off some ‘internet banter’ comments on the blog last Friday, but was deleted so perhaps this week we will also have feedback.

LAST WEEK’S TEAM

THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS

… the highest scorer of each gameweek in our league is invited to share a few insights into what got them so many points… last week’s highest scorer was Ross Herlihy, and man behind the Life Styles Festival, who got 99 points, which for context was about 160% of the average score which was 57, which was just outside the top 15,000 scorers in the world this past gameweek… Ross shares the secret of his success here...

The secret to my success was desperation! I'm in a few different leagues but like most people I have one that I pay the most attention to, and after winning it last year I'm now 97 points behind first place. The last few weeks were torture with injuries, suspensions, captains not playing and then coming off the bench late in games and racking up 2 points so I put it all behind me, new year, wild card, new team!

Last week and this coming week are obviously 2 important weeks of double games. I figured a lot of people would be playing 3 chelsea players and maybe 1 Southampton players, and since I'm in need of differential points I took a punt on 3 SH and only 2 chelsea players to have some spare money for other decent players. I didn't want to get overly Double week obsessed either as that could be a waste of a wild card and hinder me later. Mata, Ba & Lambert have all been playing well this season and have been in and out of my squad at different stages. I've had Clyne most of the season and think he's great value and Shaw will probably leave my team before Man Utd in GM24.

The biggest question was to captain Mata or Ba, especially since Benitez loves a bit of rotation! I went for Mata in the end figuring that others in my league might have brought Ba and captained him hoping he got off the a flying start. Luck was on my side this week!

Ross's team selection was the following...

TRANSFERS

There’s a lot of fellas walking round online this week, who used their wildcard last gameweek, and seem to have taken on the wisdom of a 13 year old who have just kissed for the first time telling those who hadn’t yet what to do! [I don’t meet Ross there, I mean in general, ooops]. So I’ve decided that I want to do it too, sounds great to have that excitement leading up to the weekend after spending the whole week lonely and online… shit, has that metaphor veered dangerously close to a painful truth?

So I’ve just launched in and made a swathe of changes and yet kept the few big hitters – RVP, Michu, Baines etc. At least I’ve a lot to write about now

Goalkeeper, kept Jaaskelainen (double GW) and brought in Begovic, their fixtures for next couple of weeks dovetail very well.

Moving further up the pitch I’ve loaded up on double gameweekers, with 2 West Ham defenders, (possibly O’Brien won’t play both but I hope he will pull himself together since Collins is out too, hence also bringing in Tompkins while Mr C is absent), I’ve stuck with Cameron and Baines as I had them already and I’ve brought in the Swansea ‘sensation’ Davies [as mentioned by Darragh on this week’s podcast – did I mention we have a podcast?

Midfield, I decided to show Walters my moral support, if I could tussle his hair in person I would, but I can’t so spending 6.6million is the best I can do, but I am not using him this week but instead focussing on his hame game to Wigan in GM24. I’ve gone against percieved wisdom here with the double gameweek but I’ve brought in Walcott AND Wilshire, simply because if I keep making the safe moves, I’ll never overtake anyone, and let’s not kid myself it’s not like Walcott is some great curveball decision. Michu and Fellani won’t win me any awards for creativity either.

Finally up front, I’ve spotted this fella under the radar called Robin Van Persie, and also brought in Lambert & Lukaku, the former has more consistency and the latter might just be bubbling into a great run of form.

I think all told, I should get 3 good gameweeks here with minimal jiggery pokery.

THIS WEEK’S SELECTION

I write this with the weather seeming to have postponed none of the matches, if Arsenal or West Ham get cancelled, I will be floootered.

It’s all about the subs really, I’m essentially taking as many people as I have involved with the Swansea v Stoke game out of the equation, like a sort of conscientious objector. Mainly because the success of any of my number 12, 13, 14, or 15 will be at the expense of one of the opposition. A tame reason I know, but one I have slept on easily.

MY CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

Walcott with Wilshire as the Ryker to his Picard.*

*I think that I write a blog about fantasy football decisions, and use Star Trek characters as imagery might explain the lonliness I referred to earlier….

And now over to Darragh who resides in…

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Well I guess that went reasonably well…right? Mata made me look like a wight mug by doing the complete opposite of my predictions and demolishing a ‘stout’ Stoke home defense and doing nada against the Saints. Onwards and ever so slightly upwards I shall look though and gadzooks, it’s another double gameweek!  This will inevitably melt my already dwindling mental capacities but I’ve come up with a plan. Last week I resisted the temptation to spooge points like a Tony Fernandes wage budget and ultimately paid the cost. This week, I’ll have more Gunners than a middle eastern….I’ll stop right there.

So you can’t get far into this gameweek without discussing the Walcott/Cazorla debate. Except of late, it’s not much of a debate. The former offers a distinctly more direct route to points through his role as a striker, as long a Giroud remains mildly crocked. And heeeerrreee come the stats….. In the last 6 gameweeks, Theo has held the 3rd highest penalty area touches (27), behind FF wunderkinds such as Silva and Fellaini (30 and 31 respectively). Here’s where its gets really pro-Walcott though. No midfielder in the Premier League has held a higher pitch position average in the last 8 games as Walcott, with only Fellaini occupying the same pitch quadrant as him. Similarly, his 22.1 mins per chance over the last 6 weeks is only eclipsed by the incumbent fantasy started Gareth Bale. This is all while costing 0.4 less than his Spanish team mate. Furthermore, West Ham just shipped 3 against the impotent Sunderland attack and should be missing three defensive starters in Joey O’Brien, James Collins and Linda McCartney.

If you’ve been stung by DGWs in the past and want to stay as far away from them as Joey Barton from the general publics good graces, then Man Citeh offer a hugely profitable route this week. Defensively, I fancy Kolarov or Zabaleta to offer a plethora of returns against a frankly pathetic Fulham side when away from home. Before their win against WBA, they had not won away from home since Wigan in GW5. Berbatov, as always, is about as inconsistent as my similes and I fancy the Blues to not only keep a cleaner, but for the full backs to offer returns.

With this in mind, I fancy the Serbian left back to get a start and pepper the Fulham backline with long range belters. My main City player for the week is definitely Dzeko though. He’s in my ‘Spine’ on the BOTNB podcast competition and offers ridiculous value at 7.4 if only until Aguero returns. Like I mentioned on the podcast, his 86 mins per goal rivals RVP’s and desolates any other forward over the last 6 weeks. His conversion rate (21.1%) lies just behind the Dutchman’s and surprisingly, Romelu Lukaku’s as well (both at 22.2%) but his 18.1 mins per chance is the best in the league over the past month and a half.

Elsewhere, the ever present Uruguayan is back in the fore with a home fixture against the side he has twice buried hat-tricks against of late. Suarez comes into this game with his usual mind boggling, knee weakening stats. In the last 6 weeks, he’s 12 short of being a 100 clear in terms of final third touches than his nearest forward competitor (Benteke) and has 80 oppositional penalty area touches whilst his nearest competitor languishes on 57 (Kenwyne Jones). His 37 attempts on goal in that time is 6 more than RVP (I’ll just compare everything against him) in the same time frame but as we all know, Suarez is a continuous gamble, particularly with the emergence of Sturridge. Will he continue to have the same level of involvement with the body-poppin’ prodigy going through the centre? I tend to think not. But as for this week, it’s difficult to look past El Pistolero’s credentials.

Finally, I’ll touch on two other members of the ‘Power 5’ midfield. Both Michu and Fellaini have maintained scintillating form thus far but surely one will have to drop off, right? If either of these will, I’m beginning to the think the Spaniard will. His last 3 GWs have seen him sit deeper and deeper, culminating in his first average game position being stationed in his own half. Fellaini on the other hand seems to be continuously eeking further forward as Jellyfish continues to struggle for goals. Michu has a disturbingly high conversion rate to date. While he has a 21% conversion rate, similarly high scoring midfielders such as Mata, Fellaini, Hazard, Cazorla and Gerrard have rates of 15.6%, 14.8%, 13.6%, 11.1% and 8.9% respectively. Whilst this initially may look appealing, conversion rates have a tendency to regress to the mean over time, with the mean usually being around the 14% mark for midfielders. Whether Michu can keep this exceptionally high rate up is doubtful (he was at a 26.4% conversion rate 5 GWs ago) is doubtful, so wildcarders beware. He’ll remain in my thoughts for this week, purely for “I told you so’s” if nothing else. There’s simply no way this can backfire……

Captains Choices:                     Last Weeks Choices::

Walcott                             Mata (16pts)
Dzeko                               van Persie (6 pts)
Suarez                              Dzeko (5pts)
Fellaini                            Berbatov (2pts)
Kolarov                           Fellaini (3pts)

Punt: C.Brunt                                  Ramirez (7pts)
                                              (6.5 points per player)

Gameweek 22 Season 2012/2013

So things have just gone from slightly shit to really shit at Camp Ronan in last few weeks, over the Christmas period – Oh yeah, happy new year one and all, I hope you all had a good time and all that – I have suffered the ignominy of dropping to the second page of my own league [I hope I don’t have to use the adage ‘out of my league’ at some poin

To catch up to the top 20 of my league is probably unlikely this season, so my eyes will be on the weekly and monthly prizes now. Those prizes are pints, which is possbily the reason I’ve stalled so much this season… catch-up 22?

I’ve been sick all week too (this is my first time sitting at my desk since Tuesday) and I’m just trying to play catch up – we were supposed to start podcasting this week too but that’ll be all next week. Perhaps I should postpone all my new years plans to the chinese one? With that in mind Darragh has really carried the can for this week’s blog. My notes are written in a paracetamol induced haze (Sergeant Sliothar? I thought it was hilarious at the time).

Everyone knows I should use my wildcard immediately but I’d not make optimum use of this week, so I’ve just gone with one which I’ll explain later.

REVIEW OF NEW CORK COSMOS

As 4 gameweeks have passed since last update, I don’t have much to add except nothing went my way and I just slipped away from the pack. In GM 21 I scored the exact average like, I’m living in the identikit legohouse of surburbia of fantasy football.

WHAT’S THE POINTS

Points scored last week                       - 52 Points
Average points scored in that week      - 52 points
Points off the top                                 - 248 points, a further 81 points since christmas.
Position in BOTNB League                - 62th (down 23 places   L x 23 )

LAST WEEK’S TEAM

TRANSFERS

1.4 million to play with

Like pretty much everyone else I’ve been drawn to Villa’s home game to Southamton, so I’ve brough in Bentenke at the expense of Peter Crouch; but if this is true [and I pray to sweet divine jeebus that it is, Peter Crouch doesn’t even pick himself at the moment - http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/264748/standings/

THIS WEEK’S SELECTION

I’m going with Schwarzer in goal (at home to Wigan) over Jaaskelainen (away to Sunderland) so the latter gets the number 12 jersey, I’ve also dropped his team mates Collins to number 15, and Nolan to 13. Sitting in between them will be Cameron who is at home to Stoke.

I believe Sidwell will be fit (I read it, so must be true), but I wonder will I switch Brunt out and Bring in Nolan to start

Here’s the screenshot.

MY CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

It’s gonna be one of my front three, Torres has the two games and should start both… so I’m erring towards him now even though I think I’ll be pushing him out the door next week too.

And now over to Darragh who has done all the work this week…

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Euy, so that was intense. More football matches than diamonds on Messi’s Ballon D’Or suit prevented me from straying too far from the RVP safety net over the festivities. January appears to be much of the same as Fantasy Football meltdowns aplenty are on the horizon after the announcement of two double gameweeks in the next two….eh….. gameweeks. High levels of rotation have made statistics a bit more difficult to unravel so if in doubt, lob all your proverbial eggs into the basket of van Persie.

Elsewhere, this week offers us a bounty of Chelsea options as the face a back 4 that are about as stable as an middle eastern government in Southampton. Granted they face a stout Stoke at the Britania 4 days earlier but assuming he doesn’t get ‘Shawcrossed’, Juan Mata surely the most stable of the Blues options. Indeed, Chelsea have failed to win all 6 games he hasn’t started this year, a stat that hopefully makes him immune from susceptibility to Rafa Rotation. He created a whopping 27 assists in 2012, the second highest in Europe’s Top 5 leagues (behind Memut Ozil on 29) and looks to continue the trend in 2013, setting the joint highest total (with David Silva) for successful passes (23) in the final third of the pitch in 2013’s only gameweek thus far.

As with any Chelsea attacking option this week, anything above 2 points taken from the Stoke fixture will be viewed as a bonus. Mata is possibly the least likely to suffer from rotation as Hazard, Oscar, Lampard, Marin and Moses duke it out for the other two attacking roles. Defensive options mainly lie at the Afro-Backside duo of David Luiz and Ivanovic but perhaps neither are worthy of the armband given Stoke’s home form.

Elsewhere, It’s the gameweek of the budget forward. While RvP has hit the £14 million mark, I’ve taking the Tesco value approach and lumped together 2 budget forwards whose combined value barely surpasses that of the Dutchman. Edin Dzeko faces a crumbly Arsenal back four that has conceded 10 in their last 5 home games. Aguero’s hammy and Balotelli’s training ground handbags make the Bosnian’s chances of starting around about the highest they’ve been all season. Dzeko tends not to waste too much time either. In terms of minutes per goal attempt, he ranks behind only fellow super sub Javier Hernandez (16.8 mins per attempt) and Johnny shoot/dive/insult/bite/racial slur-a-lot Luis Saurez (13.8 mins per attempt) in the last 6 gameweeks.

I’m also taking a lazy, meandering punt on Dimital Berbatov this week. Since his goalless 7 game haul induced by his Bryan Ruiz withdrawal symptoms, Uncle Bulgaria has repaid owners with 2 goals and an assist in his last three. Wigan could have some guy named Ivan Ramis (wasn’t he in Ghostbusters?) marking him this Saturday and coupled with Ruiz’s continued return to match fitness, it could all ensure high returns for the mercurial forward this weekend.

I can’t get through another blog without going for my weekly dose of Everton man love. When he’s not head butting hatchetmen (sorry Shawcross fans, he’s getting a doing today), Fellaini offers fantasy value like few midfielders. The fact that in 25% of the games he’s started he’s maintained a level or higher average pitch position to Jelavic shows his continued importance to the Toffees attack. He dominates the Croat in almost every stat department, maintaining a higher average shot per game ratio (3.2 to 2.6), created chances (1.4 to 1.1), successful dribble (1.6 to 1.4) and percentage of goal involvement (39.3% to 26.6%). Long story short, if you’re looking for Everton attack cover, go with the fro’.

My top fantasy football captain options this week are:

1.    Juan Mata - (a) Stoke (h) Southampton
2.    Robin van Persie - (h) Liverpool
3.    Edin Dzeko - (a) Arsenal
4.    Dimital Berbatov - (h) Wigan
5.    Marouane Fellaini – (h) Swansea

Punt Option: Gaston Ramirez – (a) Aston Villa (a) Chelsea

Gameweek 18 Season 2012/2013

It’s the last gameweek before Santa packs his sack, and also the first of a mega extravaganza of 4 gameweeks in 10 days…eeek – this is one of those periods when the amateurs who aren’t used to drinking every night lose ground cos they forget to catch the deadlines. This is a pretty exciting time of the year, but realistically the last blog we’ll get done this year.

… but 2013 is going to be mega, we will be unveiling news of a sponsor and we shall be moving into the world of podcasting…

And Darragh and I just want to wish you all a happy Christmas to you and yours and all those you care about, but of course we want your teams to do worse than ours.

GAMEWEEK 16 REVIEW OF NEW CORK COSMOS

Well I got 9 points better than the average, but my captaincy choice (I went bravely with RVP) got 45% of those points, so that leaves that only 2 other of my players got more than 3 points… so that makes it a simple bad week.

Got the keeper right? Only Jaaskelainen played so it’s a moot point. But he did well and got 7 points.

Got my subs decisions right? Kinda, two got 0 points, Nolan got just 2 points…but that puts him on par with most of his team mates at NCC.

Alternate Selection Point Swing – 1 point. (if Nolan had played instead of Crouch)

WHAT’S THE POINTS?

Points scored last week                       - 53 Points
Average points scored in that week      - 44 points
Points off the top                                 - 167 points, exactly the same as last week.
Position in BOTNB League                - 39th (up 8 places  J )

LAST WEEK’S TEAM

THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS
…last week’s highest scorer once again was Aidan Molloy, but he did the same in GM 15,  so it’d be kinda redundant to get him to write it again, as he did tell us in last week’s blog he is “ the shepherd and the majority of managers are the sheep.”

In second place were jointly Darragh McHenry, who happens to be the Captain here in Captains Corner… and since he did a SOMS contribution this season, I will be passing the conch this week to Sam Boland, who got 80 points last week with an aptly name team (which I'll let you see for yourself).

I was as surprised as anyone when Ronan asked me to write 'Secret of my Success'. My initial response was 'not sucking so hard': between Gameweeks 2 and 13, I scored over 45 *once*. Abandoned, randomly generated teams were outscoring me with ease. In desperation, I played my wildcard in Gameweek 4, to no avail.

Recently, I've turned it around, and I think the answer was ruthlessness. For example, a player in one of my leagues - team name Blues Brothers - this gameweek benched £25.4m of talent just because he's a Chelsea fan. There's no room for that kind of sentiment, but sure, ye already know that.

Mostly, though, I was finally ruthlessness with myself. I admitted I didn't know better than everyone else, bit the bullet, and bought Michu (48.5% ownership), Van Persie (38.3%) and Shawcross (31.9%). Differentials be damned.
Speaking of ruthlessness, sometimes it's as hard to part with an out-of-form player who previously scored you load of points as it is to part with your favourite players, but lads, Bale and Fellaini should be gone from your squads already.

However, occasionally it pays to follow Fergie's example: some players need the hairdryer, others need kid gloves. So it is with Santi Cazorla; in nine gameweeks, he scored 3 points or less, but has only once gone more than weeks without
scoring at least 6. If you can handle the frustration, he'll repay you with hauls.

In short, your guess is as good as mine. But guess right, because the cup starts this week.

TRANSFERS

I started with 1.4 million to play with

ISTEACH!
AMACH!

Like anyone who knows their shizzle Fellani was transferred out on Sunday night (who has lost .2 million in value since then) and also as I said in previous week I also got rid of Ruddy [what a maverick eh? Getting rid of a player who is injured for forseeable future)

I had to move fast and to be honest I have doubts about the decisions I took already

In their place I brought in Schwarzer at Fulham and Yaya Toure at Man City, now the latter caused me to be essentially lectured by our honourable Captain at how bad a decision it was etc etc, I expect him to play all 4 games and perhaps pick up a goal/assist and a few clean sheets. Simples.

In the former, I’m hoping Fulham will tighten up a bit, especially as he’ll be my only option on ‘boxing day’ but I fear that match will also be postponed cos of that pesky tube strike going on.

I’ve 1.1 million left in the coffers and I’m anticpating a few trades between now and when we next talk.

THIS WEEK’S SELECTION

I’ve put Schwarzer on the bench as their trip to Anfield is more likely to result in conceeding a goal that West’s Ham visit by Everton.

The only real decision was between playing Berbatov (similarly at Liverpool) or Crouch (away at Spurs); I’ve gone with the side of drama and with Crouch returning to an old club etc etc. As ever it might chance but realistically in probably won’t.

Here’s the screenshot.

MY CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

RVP, away at Swansea, is my current choice, but I do fear of rotation. I may change tonight but I doubt it.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

We’ve decided to do a Christmas Captain’s Corner and have it uploaded in advance of gameweek 19.
It should be up maybe the night of Christmas day...

Gameweek 17 Season 2012/2013

Welcome to the Back Of The Net Boy blog on Fantasy Football, join us on facebook if you want.

I was relatively full of Christmas Cheer last Gameweek, feeling like this was gonna be my turning point in Fantasy Football but it turned out that it felt more like this.

Anyway I need to (whtich is one of my favourite recordings and songs ever Ronan-Fact Fans), and get right back on that horse – mix some metaphors and get back in the game…

GAMEWEEK 15 REVIEW OF NEW CORK COSMOS

I picked three players who got scored more than 3 points, and one that managed the ignomity of a minus one;

Got the captain right? Nope, and what makes it worse is that this was what I wrote last week “Nope, that Swanish (Spain and Swansea put together) fella had a great 16 point haul.”, well at least he only got 12 in GM16 – Facepalm, with echo.

Got the keeper right? Only Jaaskelainen played so it’s a moot point. And he just got 1. Ruddy out.

Got my subs decisions right? No, my unused defender (Cameron) scored three points more than the 4 I selected put together; and Sterling scored more than 2 of my used midfielders put together

Alternate Selection Point Swing – 18 points. (inc if I had captained Michu instead), a difference of 18 places on the league table.

WHAT’S THE POINTS

Points scored last week           - 41 Points
Points off the top                     - 167 points, a further 36 points off the pace.
Position in BOTNB League    - 47th (down 15 places  L )

LAST WEEK’S TEAM

THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS

…last week’s highest scorer was Aidan Molloy, of Stade de Schull with a humnogous 87 point haul, [which for the record was the exact same amount as Pat from GM 15]. Here are his thoughts on gameweek 16…

I'd like to think the secret to my success is my down to my overall knowledge of the game and the touch of class I bring to it. But as Arsenal in the past have learned, not always will beautiful football and that touch of class suffice in claiming the major honours.

I have this year entered "back of the net boy" and other leagues where I do not know the opposition but my real drive and probably the main secret to my success lies in the league with my fellow colleagues. As a lot of you know this rivalry cannot be matched and the pressure of winning drives me on to succeed. I think it's good to find a compatriot of similar skill and play some mind games, friendly banter etc. i.e to get inside his head to gain an advantage. If you struggle to find originality in this sector look out for some Jose Mourinho interviews. He plays this card exceptionality.

Basically people, you must treat FF as much more than a game. It must become your religion to succeed. Also, I'd advise you fellow FF managers to back your own ability and not to act like sheep when it comes to picking players. Don't fall back on websites like FF Scout or others when it comes to picking your best 11. Be original and look for differentials. As I mentioned above my overall knowledge of the game sets me apart from the rest. For example I purchased Miguel Pérez Cuesta (aka Michu) one week before the first game week and needless to say he hasn't moved since. How many of you can say the same? After spending a lot of time watching Spanish football last year it was easy for me to decide that Michu would be a hit in the PL. My eye for a bargain cannot be matched. So to sum it up as many of you my know from reading this the secret to success is my ability basically, am I the greatest? No of course not I've made too many mistakes to ever be on that pedestal but I am the special one. I play the game to way it should be played, with class and distinction. To sum it up I am the shepherd and the majority of managers are the sheep.
Many thanks for your attention,

1.4 million to play with

Like Christmas shopping itself, there’s no point going too crazy – I need a few things for a few people, Jaaskelainen needs some back up and my defence needs something to make less porous… but judging by my recent decisions all not paying off, and looking at my team options this week, I’m gonna leave it as it is. I know I’m playing with the chance that Ruddy (injured till March) willd rop by .1 or even .2 in value, which is a mild worry tbh. But today there is no obvious solution at his price range with good fixtures.

And it’ll give me some sort of leeway to prep for christmas fixture rush, I think I’ll make 3 transfers next week at cost of just 4 points.

ISTEACH/AMACH

Well Ruddy needs to go, so De Gea, Guzan, Reina are all in my reckoning
On the second possible replacment there, the reVILLAtion ( see what I did there) seems to be gaining traction, their next 3 (away at anfield and stamford bridge, then hosting spurs) might be a slight derailment, but Lawton ( a defender who is playing in midfield positions)/ Weimann / Bannan / Bentenke are all looking interesting.

Johnson at Liverpool seems to be the tip de jour;  also in defence Rafael looks tempting, but with more defenders coming back into fitness at OT will he get rotated more? (yes)

To make these changes I’m going to have shuffle the deck in midfield, there’s no obvious candidate to go but I’ll have to decided, perhaps Dempsey to free up some cash.

There’s been a bit of talk at the Hateau (admin offices of New Cork Cosmos) of Baines leaving to free up cash (accounts department) but someone else (fantasy historian) is arguing he constantly hits the toppermost of the poppermost of the defenders charts.

THIS WEEK’S SELECTION

It’s pretty simple, only have 1 GK option anyway; Bardsley is quite injured (orange turned to red over last 24 hours) and away at Man Utd so he’s got the number 15 shirt all to himself. I doubt Reading will manage a clean sheet against Arsenal so Storey is on the bench, even though his set pieces etc; but I reckon West Ham will grind an attritional draw, so much so I’ve benched Nolan (to 1st choice sub) too. And that’s my team

Here’s the screenshot.

MY CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

RVP, at home to Sunderland – this won’t be a day for differentials. Even though now I say it, I’m worried about rotation, so will wait till last minute and possibly upgrade Dempsey

BACK OF THE BET BOY

West Brom v West Ham, ending in a draw     - 12/5
Everton to come from behind and win - 12/1
Spurs & Swansea both to score                      - 8/13

€2 accumalator will potentially win me           - €142

CAPTAIN’S CORNER WITH Darragh

A pretty mixed week last week. Highly disappointed by Everton’s Afro Dynamo and the ever decreasing Dimi Berbaflop but pleased with the choices of Michu and in particular Sessegnon. Moving forward, this game week looks like a return to the heavy hitter ranks where vast amounts of theoretical cash will be spooged over the likes of Suarez, Rooney, Van Persie and…….Robert Snodgrass?

Oddly enough, it’s with the Scotsman that I’ll begin wading through the numbers. Norwich have visibly improved, going on a remarkable undefeated run stretching back to GW 7. Furthermore, they employ a 4-3-3/4-5-1 system than enables two midfielders to essentially play as auxiliary forwards, ala Swansea with Routledge and Hernandez. Snodgrass has occupied the right flank for the season so far and his whopping 45,000 transfers to date in this GW show his perceived potential although his positioning still remains quite defensive as Houghton has looked to shore up his once leaky backline. In fact, several full backs such as Leighton Baines, Rafael and Glen Johnson have obtained a higher average field position. Where ‘Snoddy’ really excels though is his sheer involvement in any Norwich attacking move. He is involved in 67% of the Canaries goals over the past six weeks and has more passes in the final third, more passes received in the final third and more chances created than any of his midfield counterparts. Furthermore, Wigan have shipped 14 goals in their last 6 games with their captain Gary Caldwell’s absence leaving their defensive line as mushy and gooey as a out of date brussel sprout.

Outside of Snodgrass as the budget option, there is a veritable Christmas feast of heavy hitters to choose from. First on my list is the in-form green monster Wayne Rooney. With Shrek sure to plague our screens all over the festive period, he’s duly come back to form with a whopping 6.7 fantasy point return per game since GW12. This towers over van Persie’s total of 5.4 ppg and indicates Rooney’s role at the fulcrum of the United attack. His 54.4% involvement in United’s goals in the past month is by the highest on the team (van Persie is second with 28.3%) and has retained spot kick duties despite early season misses.

Having highlighted Rooney’s current purple patch, his Dutch striking partner can also not be ignored. Chris Glover at PremierLeagueFantasy.blogspot has estimated through United’s average amount of shots, shots on target and the defensive weaknesses of their opponents (Sunderland) that a goal count of 3.7 for the home side can be estimated for this weekends clash. This makes United cover more essential than ever and can even come in the form of Rafael who continues to maraud from right back with serious assist potential.

Moving on to more sacrilegious captaincy choices, we look to Tottenham and like Jesus rising from the dead, Clint Dempsey has once again risen to fantasy prominence after last weeks display. AVB’s midweek comments proclaiming Dempsey’s position to be “striker” along with Adebayor’s penchant for being a twat should see the man from States side getting an extended run up front. Although Dempsey has a relatively small sample size, the last two GWs show his role as the primary link up to the forwards. In that time, he had double the amount of touches in the final third as Defoe (99-
43) and also had more slapshots on the goaltender (5-4) than the England International.

Swansea’s porous defensive display against Norwich should bode well for Spurs as will Laudrup’s decision to field a full strength team in their Milk /CocaCola/ Worthington/ Carling/ Capital One Cup victory against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night. Buyers may need to be beware of Dempsey however IF Gareth Bale makes a return this weekend, inevitably vulturing set piece duties from the Clint.

Having crushed fantasy owners in recent weeks with the accuracy of a one armed archer, I’m again throwing my eggs into the Luis Suarez basket. Cue either scenes of delirium as the ickle’ Uruguayan bags a hat-trick or….and this is probably more likely, I melt my face with nearby battery acid as he wellies his 11th shot wide, calls Steven Ireland a “Knackerito” and gets a red card for diving after collapsing upon seeing his own reflection. This is how I spend my Saturdays. Social lives are for chumps anyway…..

Gameweek 16 Season 2012/2013

Hey hey, it’s almost Christmas and all of us at New Cork Cosmos HQ need a christmas miracle.

GAMEWEEK 15 REVIEW OF NEW CORK COSMOS

Dang, thought I’d done relatively well this week, but of course what with most of have the same bunch of players, rising tides lifted all boats.  57 points seems to have been the ballpark average score of everyone in the top half of our league.

Got the captain right? Nope, that Swanish (Spain and Swansea put together) fella had a great 16 point haul.

Got the keeper right? Only Jaaskelainen played so it’s a moot point.

Got my subs decisions right? Yes

Alternate Selection Point Swing – 14 points. (inc if I had captained Michu instead)

WHAT’S THE POINTS

Points scored last week           - 57 Points
Points off the top                     - 131 points
Position in BOTNB League    - 32nd (up 5 places)

LAST WEEK’S TEAM

THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS
…last week’s highest scorer was Pat O’Donovan, of Dynamo Douglas [who for the record have the same name every year, which is a rarity in Fantasy League terms] with a humnogous 87 point haul. Here are his thoughts on gameweek 15…

The Secret of My Success stems from a decision I made about 6 weeks ago. That was to ignore all my hunches, gut feelings and friends who seem to know what they are talking about and instead pick a starting 11 from players who are as close to the top in their position as I could afford. Last week 9 of my 11 were in the top 5 in their position and I hit paydirt with 8 of them (Bale being the notable exception). Happy Days

His Team

TRANSFERS

Maloney out, as he is injured for GM16, and would be defo benching him for GM 19/20 & 21 too. Also gone is Hazard who has lost form, possibly won’t play this week anyway and then the trip to World Club Cup, Moses seems to have become an option for Benitez and we all know how much Rafa loves trying all his options – insert gag about options here, once I remember if it’s a hot chocolate or a hot chocolate substitute.

I’m really thinking outside the box and bringing in Fellani and Dempsey; taking a leaf from Pat’s notes and decided to go with some known quantities.

And in what might shriek of short-term- ism, Williams at Swansea has gone (2 clean sheets in last 9 games isn’t worth having, and since I played him on the bench so much, it really was treading water) and I’m bringing in Shorey at Reading, 2 games this week, so hopefully one clean shoeet from either will offset the cost of a third transfer (I had 2 from last week).

All told I’m not left with 1.4 million pounds to play with for next set of transfers.

THIS WEEK’S SELECTION

Starting with benching the doubtful Crouch and the completely ruled out Ruddy.
Also on the bench is Sterling, who has a tricky tie away at West Ham, but more specifically for me sicne I will have the Hammers’s keeper and key defender in my line up, I don’t want him doing well anyway [it must grate liverpool fans that a visit by Liverpool is deemed less difficult than a visit from Everton by Fantasy Football Scout’s fixture ticker]; and finally I will bench Cameron who is playing for Stoke at Aston Villa.

I am clearly hoping both my debutants score, ergo I need Baines to get several assists rather than the clean sheet.

Here’s the screenshot.

MY CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN

My decision for this last week was “Berbatov, all the way. RVP as vice.”, which is what I was thinking again… but since I’m staying on tonight, I will possibly revisit the decision a few times. I’m wondering about Nolan…  but enough of my captain's thoughts lets go to....

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Argggggh! Suarez! His brain melting tendency to need 1,472 chances before hitting the net need came to the fore again last week. His threat numbers remain at a disturbingly high level so despite his suspension, I’ll be keeping the faith with the polarizing Uruguayan. This week I’ll be looking at some budget options for captaincy as all but 1 of my options are under the £8m mark.

My primary candidate for the armband this week is the in-form afro rockin’ fantasy nugget, Marouane Fellaini. Fellaini seems to have taken up the mantle for the Toffees goal scoring responsibilities as Nicola Jelavic continues to struggle for form. In fact, in Everton’s stalemate with Man City last week, the Belgian played a full pitch quadrant (That’s an average of 6/7 yards further up field for you first time readers) ahead of his team mate. It appears as if Moyes has now pushed Fellaini into the role of a striker more so than sitting in the hole. The numbers back this hypothesis up. In the last 4 game weeks, Fellaini has had 23 touches in the opposition penalty area, with only Kevin Nolan having more (27) of all midfielders. This despite Fellaini playing one game less due to his suspension against Norwich in GameWeek 14. His shot accuracy rating of 87.5% in this time frame is by far the greatest of any midfielder who has had more than 2 efforts on goal (Shelvey of Liverpool is next with 80%).

Speaking of midfielders playing ‘in the hole’, its seem to be a constant source of captaincy potential in FPL as 4 out of the 5 highlighted players this week occupy that position. Michu seems to typify that role in the hole more than most as his late runs and minimal possession touches have seen him emerge with Frank Lampard of old type numbers this year. His 10 goals thus far see him share top spot in the scorers chart although he does so as the ‘sole midfielder’ to hit double figures. Where Michu really baffles observers though is the stat department. In Michu’s last four games, his tally of 18 penalty area touches is not even good enough for a top ten rank amongst midfielders and his ICT threat rating of 46.6 fails to even be the highest on his team (Hernandez 48.6). His 67 touches in the oppositions half in the last month fails to rank in the top FIFTY of midfielders as Swansea continuously by-pass the Spaniard with preference to winger-centric football... Despite these worrying numbers, his 4 goal haul in as many games indicates that ‘knack’ or right-time-right-placeness (god I hate intangibles) and a home fixture against Norwich offers a viable captaincy option.

Another fire in the hole midfielder is Stephane Sessegnon, who also gives us our first chance to frantically panic at a double game week opportunity since the opening week of the season. What potentially boosts the Beninian…Benanian….Beniagon…..the man from Benin’s chances is Steven Fletchers ankle injury. Should it keep him out of the double fixtures, Sessegnon will inevitable take up the role as striker once Luis Saha’s left foot falls off minutes into the first fixture. Sessegnon’s numbers have been far from compelling this term and a brief rise in form over GameWeeks 12 and 13 only highlight the consistent inconsistencies you face when taking on a Sunderland attacker.

To finish off, I’ve decided that this is the week Arsenal turn there fortunes around. Wenger is simply too good a coach to let this sort of petulant criticism continue and West Brom appear to have run out of steam after their juggernaut of a start to the season. My gut had hinted at leaning toward Walcott but the numbers, as well as the frails winger’s calf injury, now have pointed me firmly toward his midfield counterpart, Santi Cazorla. I can’t believe I’m saying this after the GameWeek 9 debacle, but Cazorla’s numbers are too strong, despite his side’s poor vain of form. In the previous two GameWeeks, no midfielder has had more attempts on goal, received more passes in the final third, had more successful dribbles in the final third or a higher success rate in final third passes than Cazorla. For no other reason than an imminent plethora of cheesy ‘Santi comes early for Arsenal’ tabloid headlines, I envisage a healthy points total for the Spaniard. Though I may have said that exact line before….ahem.
